He is not as popular as Pyramid Head from Silent Hill 2, but Robbie the rabbit has become one of the visible faces of Konami’s horror saga. Will we see it again in the form of a remake?
If something fascinates us Silent Hill, Konami’s terrifying saga, is the fear of the unknown. Throughout the different games of the franchise, we come across monsters beyond human understanding, as is the case of Pyramid Head.
The iconic pyramid-headed monster debuted in Silent Hill 2, and we will see him again on October 8, 2024 in the remake for PS5 and PC (also in the Return to Silent Hill movie).
But do you remember Robbie? He was an endearing pink stuffed rabbit, who we met with Heather in Silent Hill 3. Since his first appearance, Robbie the rabbit became one of the most recognizable faces of the psychological horror franchise (even dancing with Norman Reedus).
Whether in creepypastas, novels or Silent Hill merchandising, many players have nightmares about Robbie, especially because of his appearance as a child’s stuffed animal… covered in blood.
What is the origin of Robbie the rabbit? Konami’s senior chief designer, K.Y.., revealed it in an interview with GameSparkwhich has translated the portal Automaton.
We already warned you that Robbie is not just a video game characterand in real life you could run into someone like him…
Robbie lurks around every corner
To document the development of Silent Hill 3, designer KY visited some of the most terrifying (and suggestive, depending on how you look at it) places in Japan, such as ruins, parks, abandoned towns or train stations.
The creation of Robbie the rabbit is based, in a way, on a true event. The designer of Silent Hill 3 was walking through some ruins, when, suddenly, he saw a mysterious figure.
From the top of a train station, a person dressed as a pink rabbit was giving balloons to children. That’s when KY’s lightbulb went on.
It turns out to be an unusual fact in our daily lives. It is precisely what KY was looking for: the abnormal within the normal.
Obviously, we’re not saying that this bunny costume was identical to Robbie’s final design, but it was the big inspiration for shaping it.
KY also referred to the popularity of the Silent Hill 3 mascot for fans of the saga, something that considered “surprisingly positive”.
Will we have a remake of Silent Hill 3? Konami does not hide its intentions to make more remakes of the psychological horror saga, although everything will depend on how well it fits. Silent Hill 2 Remake in October 2024.
